I’ll be honest. I was never a big fan of Michael Jackson. It had nothing to do with his image or his personal life. I simply never took the time to listen to his songs because I don’t appreciate oldies. I’m a very modern individual. I enjoy new technology, the Internet, electricity, all that wonderful futuristic jazz. So when it comes to music, I listen to recent music. My Itunes has a few oldies, but only the generic popular ones: some Beegees, one Stevie Wonder song, two or three Michael Jackson songs, Rick Ross, etc…
And now that M.J.’s dead, so many artists have decided to create M.J. tributes and new remixes that I can’t help but pay attention to some of the songs I never took interest in. I find myself humming Rock with You, P.Y.T., and Remember the Time whenever I’m walking around campus and I’ve realized that oldies are good. We really don’t cherish things until they are gone.
Sure you M.J. fans hate me for jumping on the bandwagon after he’s dead, but I never said I suddenly became passionate about his music. I’m not crying for him and I haven’t downloaded every single song he’s every recorded. I’ve simply become more exposed to some of his singles and my music interests have been broadened. Point is, realizing that I actually like M.J.’s songs has made me aware that I need to start experiencing new things that I haven’t enjoyed in the past or else I’ll miss out on a lot in life.
