Second Home

Going back to Fremont is great. I love seeing my parents and my high school friends. I got to spend a lot of time relaxing from work and making up for lost time with Anna while I was in Berkeley. But even with all the great things happening at home, part of me still missed Berkeley and my new apartment and roommates. It’s strange to come back home to an empty room in Fremont after I’ve lived with Khang and Charles for almost two months.

Me and Khang spent nearly two weeks finding furniture to design our apartment. We put so much time into it that although it’s quite small and messy, it has become a second home that I love coming back to. And thanks to Comcast, we finally have internet here after living for nearly two months without it. So now whenever I have a random whim to make a blog post, I don’t have to write it on Word and copy/paste it in the morning when I can find a building that has internet.

People say you have the best four years of your life in college and it’s becoming more apparent how true that statement is. I’ve learned so many common sense skills from living with Khang and Charles such as basic cooking and Do-It-Yourself projects around the apartment. I originally thought getting furniture for this place would cost a fortune but we literally spent 10 dollars total on buying a bookshelf and mini table from one of our neighbors.

Our other desks, chairs, 3 sofas, TV-stands, etc… were all taken from postings on Craigslist or from our apartment garage where people threw away valuable mattresses. Lugging around a bed frame for several blocks may have been a hassle but it’s definitely paid off and I love the setup of my room here.

I purposely set my desk in a way that would enclose me. For some reason, it gives me a sense of security and coziness that I never felt with the setup I had back home in Fremont. I always dream of having a huge house in the future but I realized that I would feel very empty and lonely living in that house even with a family. Maybe I’ll just invite random friends to stay over every night so the place is always packed…

I think we plan to move out of this apartment next year because the rents simply too high for the space provided. It’s sad, but I think we can emulate a similar set-up next year in a bigger apartment. Either way, I’ll enjoy this place till then.
