Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes

The number one rule in understanding how someone else feels is to walk in their shoes. You will never truly understand what someone is going through unless you have experienced it yourself. I don’t care how good your intuition is, how much of a friend you think you are, or even if you have the power to read minds. You will not understand and sympathize with someone when they are in a situation you have not been in before.

So do not criticize or act like you are better in any way because you are not. There’s no point. You can’t understand how a starving child feels in a third world country or how someone feels in a breakup if you haven’t been there in the past.

Putting someone down for a situation they are in is immature and childish. Rather, you should be doing your best to understand what they are going through so you can offer positive and helpful advice. Let that person know you are there for them no matter what they are going through. Show the true meaning of friendship to someone you care about, even if their situation has caused them to abandon you and neglect you for a long period of time. Be the bigger man/woman and stay loyal to the ones you love because if both of you are truly friends, he/she would do the same for you too.

A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
