Today’s interview is on Deborah Ho, a sophomore majoring in Fine Arts/Cinema Critical Studies at USC.

1) When did you first develop a passion for art?

Deborah: I’ve always been interested in art. I was that kid in kindergarten who got congratulated by the teacher for doing nice drawings. HAHA just kidding.

Seriously though, I got into it in high school after I realized that there was a possibility of a future with it. Prior to that, I always thought I was going to be an English professor or something more financially stable.

2) What form of art do you enjoy the most?

Deborah: I grew up on cartoons. I’m in a lot of illustration-based cartoon forums so i don’t really like fine art or modern art. I respect it, but it’s just…pretty blah to me. I like cartoons, cinematography, packaging design, children’s industrial design, illustration, and painting. Painting’s legit, but I don’t really like fine art painting no offense.

3) Who are your favorite artists and what about them and their work fascinates you?

Deborah: Genndy Tartakovsky!!! He’s the guy who created Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, etc… Ryan Larkin, a really famous animator. A lot of my friends on online forums. They inspire me more than any big artist. All the people that create cartoons for adult swim. I like cartoonists haha.

4) What are your long-term goals for art?

Deborah: I want to be a cartoonist for adult swim! Or a packaging designer. Or a children’s industrial designer. Just a designer?

Ideally, a cartoonist and a designer but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

5) Do u have any advice for young aspiring artists?

Deborah: Work hard, like seriously super hard. Keep in touch with the art community, seriously get involved, join forums, read magazines, stay updated ALL the time or else you’re just going to look like a chump. Keep a sketchbook and drawing utensil on you AT ALL TIMES. I cannot emphasize how important that is.

INSPIRATION WAITS FOR NO ONE
