Today’s interview is on Vivian Wei, a student studying Business Administration at UC Berkeley. She follows design with a passion and hopes to start her own design consulting business in the near future. While not reading magazines or design blogs, she dances on Berkeley’s Truelement and [M]ovement dance teams.

1) When did you first get interested in fashion?

Vivian: In high school I had a summer where I decided to redesign myself so I just started reading more fashion magazines. I tried to start putting together outfits that I liked and thought were fashionable. Ever since then I’ve had an interest in fashion.

2) Who/what is your favorite designer/line of clothing and what do you like about it?

Vivian: I really like the Marc by Marc Jacobs line. I think Marc Jacobs has really youthful designs but at the same time it isn’t cliché. It’s very fashion forward, but at the same time he keeps it young, cute and innocent.

3) What are some of your favorite design blog/magazine/websites?

Vivian: Lately I’ve been reading a lot of www.secondcitystyle.com. It’s mostly east coast based. Like when they talk about sales and stuff, the stores are in New York, but it does have a lot of good blog posts about up and coming designers and trends.

The bloggers make it really accessible to read.

4) What are your long term design goals?

Vivian: What I really want to do is kind of like consulting, but more…style consulting. A lot of people in the work world don’t necessarily have the time to go out, shop and pick outfits. What i want to do is bring outfits to them. I want to do the shopping for them and put together stuff they might like.

5) Do you have any advice for people who want to go into a fashion related industry?

I’m not an expert really, but I would say to always have an opinion. Its easy to get overwhelmed by styles and types and colors when you’re in this industry, so its important to know what you think and stick to it.
